Rapper Phife Dawg, known for being one of the founding members of the pioneering rap group A Tribe Called Quest, has died, he was 45.

Dawg who’s real name is Malik Taylor, had been suffering from health issues for years after being diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes back in 1990. He underwent a kidney transplant in 2008, which he received from his wife. This was unsuccessful, however, and by 2012 he once again required a transplant.

Nicknamed ‘The Five Foot Assassin’ and the ‘Five Footer because of his small stature, he appeared on four Tribe Called Quest songs including “Can I Kick It?”

The cause of his death is still unknown.
