Antigua and Barbuda is taking steps to ban smoking in public places.

Health Minister, Molwyn Joseph says the Attorney General has been asked to draft the necessary legislation, to allow for the change to be implemented.

Minister Joseph says the draft should be ready in the coming months and the bill brought before parliament later this year.

The government will also be making it more difficult for consumers to purchase sugary beverages, in keeping with the global move to stem the increase of diabetes and other non-communicable diseases.

The announcement came shortly after the Director General of the Pan American Health Organisation Doctor urged Caribbean countries to increase taxes on sweet drinks as part of fight against life-style related disease.
