Antigua to rearrange inmates with new remand centre, early releases for minor crimes

Antigua and Barbuda’s government has announced that a remand centre will be built to separate first time offenders from hardened criminals. Public Safety Minister Steadroy “Cutie” Benjamin says the move will address a number of issues, including overcrowding in the country’s main prison. Benjamin also says that scores of prisoners jailed for minor offences will be released early next year in an amnesty. In January this year, several prisoners were released under the Criminal Procedure Amendment Act, which was passed in Antigua and Barbuda in November 2014.
