Bahamas labour minister declares new plans to curb unemployment

Jan 7, 2016 | Caribbean, NEWS | 0 comments

The Bahamas government is suggesting that the unemployment line could become much shorter this year. The latest figures from the Department of Statistics show unemployment is now at 14.6 per cent. The country’s Labour Minister Shane Gibson admits it is concerning, but says many capital and private projects are on the way that will increase employment. Gibson noted that the biggest contributors in boosting employment lie heavily on the the opening of the Baha Mar Resort. Gibson says the government has created some 20,000 jobs since coming into office in 2012, but says jobs are being created fast enough for many of those still unemployed.
