Barbados Prime Minister Freundel Stuart says 2015 was a good year of great importance to CARICOM. Stuart, also the current chairman of CARICOM, made the statement in his end of year message. He says the year demonstrated, in no uncertain terms, the value of the regional integration project and the influence it could have internationally. According to him, CARICOM presented a united front on many occasions, including at the United Nations climate change conference in Paris, in which a landmark agreement was signed. Stuart also notes the achievements in operating the CARICOM Single Market and Economy; efforts to propel economic growth; the election of a CARICOM candidate as the Commonwealth secretary-general, and the successful hosting of Carifesta in Haiti. Looking forward to 2016, Stuart highlighted important national milestones that would be observed by Barbados, Guyana, Antigua & Barbuda, and Belize. Both Barbados and Guyana will be celebrating 50 years of independence, and Antigua & Barbuda and Belize will be celebrating 35 years of independence.
