Barn fire in rural area near Cambridge kills dozens of racehorses

A massive fire knocked down a barn outside of Cambridge last night, killing more than 40 racehorses. The blaze took place around 11 pm in the barn at Classy Lane Stables in Puslinch Township. There were at least 43 horses inside at the time, but crews were unable to rescue any of them. Damages are estimated to be between 4 and 6 million dollars. Puslinch Fire and Rescue Service Chief Steven Goode says the fire was difficult for emergency crews, but also for the owners. The Ontario Fire Marshal is conducting an investigation that is expected to last two days. The Classy Lane Stables first opened in 2003 with five barns, and all of the horses that died were owned by trainers that used them for racing at Woodbine, Mohawk and Flamboro Downs racetracks.
