South African artistry and influence will be featured at the Canadian Stage’s Spotlight South Africa Festival in Toronto this month. ‘The Meal’ created by ballet dancer Mamela Nyamaza and her company, is one of two works that explores the love/hate relationship she had with ballet, learning the art form in apartheid-era Cape town, to being the only black woman in her class when apartheid fell.
Canadian Stage artistic and general director Matthew Jocelyn says ‘It’s the smartest piece of political art I’ve seen in my life.” Also, on the main stage is ‘Dominion’, the riveting production created by dancer choreographer Luyanda Sidiya that highlights revolution and repression in post-apartheid democratic South Africa.
The Spotlight South Africa runs until April 25 for tickets and locations visit canadianstage.com.
