TIME magazine has named “Ebola Fighters” their Person of the Year for 2014.

Managing editor Nancy Gibbs announced the 8 candidates saying, “ These men and women did the hard and dangerous work in treating patients and protecting the rest of us.” She went on to applaud the fighters for their “exceptionally great amount of courage and kindness and bravery.”

What’s amazing is this issue has five different covers. We got two doctors, a nurse, an ambulance driver and a health care worker. One of the individuals photographed was Dr. Kent Brantly, the doctor who contracted the Ebola virus while in Liberia and recovered. He told the Today show “he’s honored” but that “this is not simply a historic event that we’re looking back on, its still happening, Ebola Fighters are not just people who did something brave and courageous. They are still in the trenches fighting that war as we speak.”
