Adrien Broner Faces His First Career Loss Ever

Adrien Broner’s first career loss was a huge setback for a fight that has been positioned as a major future star in the sport, as the brash Cincinnati native was stunned last night by Marcus Maidana in San Antonio. But the 24-year-old fighter isn’t making any excuses and isn’t looking to come back soft, saying he wants an immediate rematch and giving Maidana credit for his win. From David Greisman:

“I’ll tell you one thing: Make a rematch. I don’t need a warm-up fight. I want a rematch. … I’m OK. I’m still a three-time world champion in three different weight classes. Tonight Maidana was just a better man, and he fought a better fight, and I hope the fans still get what they deserved.”

Broner (27-1, 22 KO) has struggled in both of his welterweight bouts, first barely getting past Paulie Malignaggi in June via split decision, and now losing clearly to Maidana (35-3, 31 KO), who simply overpowered and outfought the rising star. There are plenty of questions as to whether or not Broner really belongs at 147 pounds just yet, but he apparently feels comfortable enough that he says he’s willing to move forward at 147, maybe learn from this, and get a rematch signed immediately. That takes some guts.
