A Calgary based danced company has put together a production celebrating Jazz icon Josephine Baker. ‘Decidedly Jazz Dance’ artistic director Kimberley Cooper created the piece called “The Year of the Horse” to honor the African American jazz legend, actress, dancer and civil rights activist.
‘DJD’ dancer Natasha Korney plays the iconic Josephine, with seven other dancers and a live band performing original music. Cooper says “the premise of this piece is that this is her fantasy world.” After some research, Cooper found Baker was born in the Year of the Horse according to the Chinese zodiac, Baker was an avid animal lover, she had a horse named after her, she rode a race horse and she owned a pet cheetah, so it’s only fitting that the production features 8 mechanical horses!
Baker moved to Paris in the 1920’s and reinvented herself. “Year of the Horse” opens November 7th at Theatre Junction Grand. Its Calgary’s oldest and most distinguished theatre.
