Trinidad and Tobago’s Central Bank Governor Jwala Rambarran has been fired. The decision was taken by the cabinet yesterday. It’s understood that the acting President has signed off on Rambarran’s dismissal. President Anthony Carmona is overseas on vacation and Senate President Christine Kangaloo is acting as President. Rambarran has been criticized by the government and other sectors for publicly naming several companies which are among the largest users of the foreign exchange in T&T. Sources also say he may have breached the Central Bank Act and the Financial Institutions Act. In a radio interview on Tuesday, Prime Minister Keith Rowley stopped short of saying he had no confidence in Rambarran. In his defense, Rambarran says he disclosed the information in the best interest of the banking system and the country.
