Legendary Poet Honoured In Postal Stamp with Quote that Isn’t Hers!April 10, 2015

The U.S. Postal Service featured Maya Angelou’s likeness was featured this week in the form of stamp along with a lyrical quotation; only the quote actually isn’t hers!
This quote; “A bird doesn’t sing because it has an answer, it sings because it has a song,” was actually written by author Joan Walsh Anglund, from a book of poetry called “A Cup of Sun” in 1967. It was noted that Ms. Angelou’s family approved the line for use on the stamp.
It doesn’t seem that the late poet, who died last year, claimed the words as her own, but it’s far more likely that the line inspired Angelou when she authored her autobiography “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings.” back 1969.
