Happiness Is Key: Part 2
Last week I looked at Matthieu Ricard, a Biochemist turned Buddhist monk theory of happiness. He believes happiness is more than an ‘emotion’ rather a ‘state of being’.
This week I will be exploring the theory of Brother David Steindl-Rast, a monk and interfaith scholar, who believes gratitude is the base of happiness.
His beliefs are simple and as follows, “It is not happiness that makes us grateful, it’s gratefulness that makes us happy.”
Steindl-Rast feels that every moment given is a gift and opportunity to be grateful. The key to his theory is that it must be continuous.
He goes on to explore how we can start living gratefully in our everyday lives; he brings up the classic quote “Opportunity knocks only once.” And rebukes it by saying, “ Every moment is a new opportunity.”
Here is audio of the Steindl-Rast explaining his theory in more detail.
