Pop legend Madonna is in some serious hot water. The singer recently released her new album ‘Rebel Heart’ and if you haven’t seen the cover art, it’s a picture of the singer with black wire crisscrossing her face, but that’s not what’s gotten her into trouble!
A post on the Pop star’s Instagram page shows pictures of Martin Luther King Jr., Nelson Mandela and Bob Marley, each with the same black wires across their face. On each posting Madonna added a special caption with the hashtag rebel heart.
For King she wrote: “this #rebelheart had a dream!”
For Mandela she wrote “this rebel heart fought for freedom!”
For Marley picture she wrote “this rebel heart sang about ONE LOVE!”
For Princess Diana she wrote: Yes Princess Diana was… rebelheart! Anyone who fights for freedom is a rebelheart!”
The controversial singer also posted pictures of John Lennon and the late artist Jean-Michel Basquiat and other notable celebrities/figures.
The backlash has been extensive, but Madonna is defending herself saying in a statement that she’s not comparing herself to them but acknowledging that they were rebels. She went on to say that the images posted on her Instagram page were fan generated and she’s not racist.
Whether she meant offence or not, influential figures such as King, Mandela and Marley were very powerful black men, I’d think twice about wrapping their faces in black wire….but that’s just me.
