Today In History: June 10th, 1940

On this day back in 1940 Jamaican political leader, publisher, journalist, civil rights activist, Marcus Mosiah Garvey, Jr. died in London at the age of 52, after suffering several strokes.
Garvey was a proponent figure in the Black Nationalism and Pan-Africanism movements, later inspiring the Nation of Islam and the Rastafarian movement.

His message of pride and dignity also inspired many fellow civil rights leaders (such as Martin Luther King, Malcolm X, and Nelson Mandela) in the early days of the Civil Rights movement in the 1950s and 1960s.
