Thirty-two year old ballerina rock star Misty Copeland is just the third black female soloist in the 75 year history of the American Ballet Theatre and now she’ll appear in the upcoming Rick Burns documentary “American Ballet Theater at 75” as part of the company’s anniversary celebrations.
Copeland joined as a soloist in 2007, but she wasn’t ready for being the only African American woman. In a recent interview she said, “I wasn’t completely prepared to experience being the only African American woman in the company for a decade.”
She went on to say she hopes to see more diversity in every aspect of the art form, on the stage, in the audiences, in the boardrooms, on the artistic staff and for it be reaching a younger generation.” The American Ballet Theatre at 75 premiers May 15 on PBS.
