Martinique has become the 11th country in the Caribbean to confirm reports of the mosquito-borne Zika virus, and the 12th country to confirm local transmission of the disease. Last month, the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) confirmed five cases of Zika in Suriname. Transmission of the virus has also been reported in Brazil, Chile, Colombia, El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico, Paraguay and Venezuela. Zika is usually mild, and severe illness requiring hospitalization is uncommon. Symptoms of the Zika virus can last from several days to a week, and include fever, rash, joint pain, and red eyes.
