Pan Am Games: Canada finishes second in medals behind USAJuly 27, 2015
The 2015 Pan Am Games have come to a close in Toronto. Team Canada completed their big medal haul, but not without some disappointment. The men’s 4×100 metre relay team was disqualified after they appeared to have won gold in 38.06 seconds. But they found that Brampton’s own Gavin Smellie stepped right on the line. The infraction was pointed out by Trinidadian runner Nic-Connor Alexander. Canada’s disqualification gave the US team the gold medal, while Brazil got silver and Trinidad & Tobago moved up to bronze. The host nation did find success elsewhere; gold in women’s softball, silver in women’s baseball, and bronze in men’s volleyball. Canada finished second in the medal table with 217 in total: 78 gold, 69 silver and 70 bronze. The United States were on top with 103 gold, 81 silver and 81 bronze, for a total of 265 medals.
