Pan Am Games: De Grasse wins 100m heat, while Canada gets gold in women’s basketballJuly 21, 2015
At the 2015 Pan Am Games in Toronto, Markham native and Canadian record holder Andre De Grasse qualified in the men’s 100 metres in Heat 1, finishing first with 10.06. In second place, Jason Livermore of Jamaica with 10.09, and in third, Cayman Islander Kemar Hyman with 10.14. In Heat 3, T&T’s Keston Bledman led the way with 9.95. In the women’s 100 metres, Trinidadian Kelly Ann Baptiste won Heat 1 with 11.07 seconds, and Jamaica’s Schillonie Calvert placed third with 11.27. In the women’s 400 metre hurdles semifinal, Trinidad’s own Sparkle McKnight made it through in 56.56 seconds. Canada’s women’s basketball team took the gold, beating the US 81-73 at the Ryerson Athletic Centre. This is the first ever Pan Am gold medal for Canada in basketball. Another gold medal was handed to Elizabeth Gleadle for the women’s javelin.
The US remains on top of the medal count with 173 – that’s 65 gold, 56 silver, 52 bronze.
Canada is second with 57 gold, 51 silver, 44 bronze for a total of 152. In third we have Brazil with 105 medals – 31 gold, 29 silver, 45 bronze.
