July 23, 2015

It was a big moment for Andre De Grasse; the Markham native made his first international victory at the Pan Am Games with a gold medal in the men’s 100 metre race last night at York University. De Grasse clocked in at 10.05 seconds. Not only that, he also qualified for the 200 metres, finishing first in his heat with 20.17. Jamaica’s Sherone Simpson also had a golden performance; she won the women’s 100 metres with a season-best time of 10.95. Another gold for Canada’s Melissa Bishop, who finished the women’s 800 metres in 1 hour 59.62 seconds. Canadian water skier Whitney McClintock won another gold, this time in the women’s slalom, and Whitney’s brother Jason McClintock got a silver in the men’s slalom.

Canada now has 67 gold medals, surpassing the old Pan Am record of 64 at the Winnipeg Games in 1999. Add to that 59 silver and 53 bronze for a total of 179 medals. The US is still first with 208 medals: 79 gold, 67 silver and 62 bronze. Jamaica has 2 gold and 1 silver; Trinidad & Tobago has a gold, a silver and a bronze, and the Bahamas has 1 gold and 1 bronze medal.
