The funeral for rhythm and Blues singer Percy Sledge was held today in Baker, Louisiana.
Mourners and fans packed the Bethany Church near Baton Rouge on Tuesday to celebrate the life of the man that pulled at our heart strings with that great soulful ballad “When a Man Loves a Woman.”
Sledge passed away last week after battling liver cancer. He was 74 years old. In the ceremony literature, the family wrote:
“Percy was a very humble ordinary man who enjoyed life and people. He had the meek and humble spirit of a baby but the voice that would send chills up your spine when he spoke. His legacy will live on forever in many hearts and minds. He was loved and respected by many worldwide.” His rise from a hospital orderly to a celebrated singer derived from his hits “ Warm and Tender Love” and “Take Time to Know Her, but it was his massive hit “When a Man Loves a Woman” that propelled him all over the world spreading love to the U.S., Europe and South Africa as well as being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.”
