On this day in 1932, South African singer and civil rights activist Zenzile Miriam Makeba was born!
Nicknamed “Mama Africa,” Makeba helped popularize African music around the world in the 1960s.
She is best known for the song “Pata Pata”, first recorded in 1957 and released in the U.S. in 1967.
Makeba who died of a heart attack back in 2008, would have been 84 years old today.
