A nine-year effort by a man in Peoria, Illinois appears to have finally come to realization.
Sculptor Preston Jackson had dedicated himself to seeing a statue of late comedian Richard Pryor erected in his hometown. Although Pryor, who passed away in 2005, was born and raised in the southern Illinois town, some residents opposed the idea of seeing a statue erected in his name, due to his documented drug-abuse and foul-mouthed humour.
Jackson himself questioned whether or not to go ahead with the sculpture but ultimately decided that Pryor’s career influence over shadowed his personal life. Eventually, Jackson got the approval of city council and raised enough funds to proceed with the project, with help from a fundraiser organized by comedian George Lopez.
