Doctors at the Victoria Hospital in St. Lucia say they have recorded an increase in respiratory diseases, mostly in young people, due to marijuana and tobacco use. Dr. Lisa Charles, Medical Director at the hospital, said over the past 10 years she has seen an epidemic with a spike in young patients suffering with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), an extremely debilitating, progressive lung disease. Medical authorities have continued to warn of the dangerous effects of smoking. Dr. Charles says that available bed space at the Victoria Hospital is severely compromised as a result of the increase in COPD patients.
