Reggae artist Captain Barkey, best known for his 1996 hit “Go Go Wine” was shot and killed in the Bronx alongside his girlfriend of about 2 years, 38 year old Tracy Bennet.
Barkey, (whose given name was Wayne Hamilton) was leaving the Motel with Tracy when a gunman ran out of hiding and fatally shot them both.
Witnesses say the killer was waiting when the couple emerged from the Holiday Motel around 3am and blasted more than two dozen bullets at the couple. The New York Police dept yesterday named 42 year old Joseph Kernizan as the suspect in the murders. Kernizan has two children with Bennett and was known to police. He has 16 prior arrests and had a restraining order against him from Bennett. Sources say friends tried several times get Barkey (who was married) to stop seeing Bennet due to the behaviour of volatile ex after being sideswiped in a car driven by Kernizan recently. Some friends of the artist claim his 2010 song “Nah Lef Joe” was in fact aimed at Joseph Kernizan and was talking about a woman he was having a relationship with who wouldn’t leave her man… Joe
