STAR RETURNS TO THE VIEW
Yesterday, STAR JONES made her first return to “The View” since announcing her departure from the show six years ago. (Star came back to raise awareness for women’s heart health.) BARBARA WALTERS said that Star’s contract wasn’t renewed . . . but that they’d agreed that Star would announce her departure on a set date.
Instead, Star jumped the gun, and surprised them by basically walking off the show early. Star said, quote, “It was ugly . . . everything . . . it was a bad emotional time. Nasty things were being said in the media. -“And I made the decision that I wanted to go out on my own terms. I wanted to be able to control it, so that if I was ever invited back, I would feel good about [it]. I had eight fantastic years here. “I came back to congratulate you on everything you’ve accomplished. I hope you congratulate meon what I accomplished.”
JOY BEHAR brought up Star’s infamous gastric bypass surgery in 2003. Star admitted she didn’t want the ladies discussing the surgery on the show, and Barbara confirmed that they “did lie [about how she lost the weight]” to “protect” her.
R.I.P. DANIEL VON BARGEN
DANIEL VON BARGEN . . . who played Mr. Kruger on “Seinfeld” . . . is in the hospital after a failed suicide attempt. (–Kruger was George Costanza’s boss at Kruger Industrial during the show’s 9th and final season.)
Von Bargen, who’s 61, shot himself in the temple in his Cincinnati apartment . . . but the wound wasn’t fatal. He called 911 and said, quote, “I’ve shot myself in the head and I need help.” When the operator asked if it was an accident, Von Bargen revealed that he was supposed to go to the hospital to have some toes amputated due to his diabetes, but he didn’t want to. He also said one of his legs had already been amputated, and that he was, quote, “not a good” diabetic. There’s also a really sad part where he says, quote, “I have no children and no wife and I’m tired . . . and I [messed] it up.” His films include “The Silence of the Lambs”, “Basic Instinct”, “Six Degrees of Separation”, “Philadelphia”, “Crimson Tide”, “Amistad”, “O Brother, Where Art Thou?” and “Super Troopers”. And he’s done guest appearances on such TV shows as “Law & Order”, “Without a Trace”, “Malcolm in the Middle”, “Judging Amy” and “The West Wing”, just to name a few of the more recent ones. He is currently in critical condition.
MAYA ANGELOU IN RECOVERY
Dr. Maya Angelou is recovering from a three-day hospital stay for an unspecified illness according to Essence.com. The 83-year-old has been traveling and making several appearances across the country. She was scheduled to speak at Texas Women’s University but canceled, according to her agent. Although there are no details on the nature of Angelou’s illness, she’s said to be resting at home. Angelou’s doctors have instructed her to slow down, which may be difficult given her commitment to hosting a radio special on the Civil Rights Era. We wish Maya a speedy recovery!
OCTAVIA GIVES HERSELF A LIFT
2011 was a banner year for The Help’s Octavia Spencer, and now she’s going to give herself a lift.
“I am going to get my boobs lifted. That’s going to be my first gift,” Spencer, 41, told Parade. “I figured going into my forties I want my boobs where they were when I was 17.”Spencer, who’s nominated in the Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture category at Sunday’s 84th Annual Academy Awards, says the surgery won’t happen until late 2012. Spencer’s body has been a hot topic in recent months: at the Screen Actors Guild Awards in January, she revealed she’s been exercising with a personal trainer.
“I’m not trying to be a thin mint,” Spencer told Us Weekly. “I’m just trying to be healthy and look good for me. So another 15 pounds and I will be fine.”
RAY J WRITES ABOUT KIM
In his new book, Death of a Cheating Man: What Every Woman Must Know About Men Who Stray, Ray J refers to a woman by the name of “KK,” who just so happens to share the initials of Kim Kardashian. In the book he writes, “We’d known each other for a while before we dated and there was a mutual attraction, but she was married … She let me know she wanted to get with me. She left her husband for me as soon as we started having sex and things between us got intense really fast.” He also writes of he and “KK” having a highly sexual relationship: “She was a straight freak who was down to do whatever, whenever and that seriously hypnotized me.” Though she isn’t mentioned by name, Kim Kardashian isn’t happy. A source told Life & Style: “Kim’s putting on a brave face, but she’s furious about Ray J cashing in on her. There’s so much that has gone wrong for her this year — he’s just another person trying to humiliate her.”
