R.I.P. MISS MELODY Rapper Ms. Melodie, (born Ramona Parker) has died. Ms. Melodie was the ex-wife of rapper KRS-ONE and was a member of Boogie Down Productions.
Ms. Melodie released her first single in 1988 called “Hype According to Ms. Melodie” and one album, Diva in 1989 on Jive Records. Her video “Live On Stage” was one of her biggest hits and she made a memorable appearance on the 1989 single “Self Destruction” and has a cameo in Queen Latifah’s video “Ladies First.”
DJ D-Nice of Boogie Down Productions and singer Monifah both expressed their condolences on Twitter:
@THEMONIFAH - RIP Miss Melody. Please keep her children, family & loved ones in ur prayers. #HipHopRoyalty
@djdnice
Rest in paradise Ramona. #MsMelodie #BDP D-Nice also added, “I had a pleasant conversation w/ Ms. Melodie a month ago. The last thing she said me to me was “I’m proud of you.” The love we all had for each other was genuine. Along the way, some of us lost focus. The love in my heart remained. Scott La Rock, KRS-One, D-Nice, Ms Melodie, & the rest of the BDP crew will always be a part of hip-hip history.”
Ms Melodie was a native of Brooklyn, NY and is survived by two sons. There is no cause of death known at this time.
For me as a child of the golden years of hip hop, this kind of music, culture and activism was a part of my awakening as a young women and really helped to shape my worldview. Which is why no matter the current state of Hip Hop, I still believe in it as an artform, because I know where it came from and where it can go. And Ms Melody and other women of her time were so important not only for what they said but what they represented as strong, real women who wore CROWNS (imagine that) and not garters. I am not one of those people who believes that we should demonize women who embrace their sexuality, I just believe that we as women and as people should be represented fully and embrace all that we are. So while there is room for the little kim's of the world, we need to make room for the Ms Melodie's, the Queens, the scholars, the activists, the teachers, and know that we have the capability to be more than just a one dimensional sexualized pinup version of what it is to be a woman.

GAME OFF
Rapper The Game had a big proposal with cameras that he put together last October at his fiance Tiffney Cambridge's school.. but the wedding has now been called off. According to the couple's wedding website, the wedding has been cancelled--with no explanation. Their site, Tiffney & Jayceon, posted the message:
We regret to inform you that the wedding of Tiffney Cambridge & Jayceon Taylor has been cancelled. No word on if they've ended the entire relationship or just the engagement. Earlier this week, it was revealed that the rapper and his girl had signed on for a reality show following the days leading up to their wedding--a la "Ev & Ocho." But that's obviously a wrap... unless of course all of this is just added drama for the show??
Game tweeted last night:
When LIFE throws you lemons.... Squeeze em' & mix em wit Patron - The Game
This is the second engagement that Game has called off. The first was his engagement to Valeshia Butterfield, who is now married to NBA baller Dahntay Jones.
ARETHA FRANKLIN IS NOT AMUSED HONEY!
One of the people who's thrown their name in to possibly be a new "American Idol" judge is ARETHA FRANKLIN. On the last hour of the "Today" show on Monday, KATHIE LEE GIFFORD BASHED that idea. Saying Quote, "If they are looking for a younger demographic, there are a lot of kids out there [who] actually don't know who Aretha Franklin is. It's sad, but they don't. Aretha has since responded with a very classy SLAP BACK saying Quote, "My audience and fans span the age of eight to 90! And are multi-ethnic, and I am very well known to young adults, tweens and teens . . . I'm surprised Kathie Lee did not research my worldwide celebrity audience."
