Disney’s iconic film “The Sound of Music” turns 50 YEARS OLD today!
In the classic movie released back in 1965, told the inspiring story Maria, who leaves her humble life as a nun during World War II to become the governess to Captian Georg von Trapp’s 7 children. Maria later falls in love with the Captain and shortly leaves Austria with their children during the war to escape the Nazis.
The Oscar-winning film was based on Austrian Baroness Maria von Trapp’s 1949 memoir “The Story of the Trapp Family Singers”. Maria later died in 1987 in Morrisville,Vermont, USA.
The film spawned legendary songs such as “The Sound of Music”, “My Favorite Things”, and the iconic song “Edelweiss”, sung by Captain von Trapp near the end of the film, as subliminal goodbye to his beloved homeland before fleeing Austria with his family.

In honor of this golden anniversary, the CTV Television will be airing the film today through to March 9th, 2015.
