Kenya Gains Independence
On this day in history, Kenya gained independence from British Rule in 1963. On that day the first constitution was formed and signed. Jomo Kenyatta of the National Union (KANU) became the first President.
In 2004, Professor Wanagari Maathai became the first black woman to ever receive a Nobel Prize; she was born in Nyere, Kenya. She was awarded the prize for her work as an environmental and woman’s rights activist.
