Slavery is Abolished in America

 
On this day in 1865, Secretary of State William H. Seward proclaimed, the 13th Amendment to the Constitution, abolishing slavery into effect.
 
It was passed by the Senate on April 8, 1864, by the House on January 31, 1865, and adopted on December 6, 1865.
 
Following the American Civil War there were three Reconstruction Amendments – abolishing slavery was the first one.
