In 1951, the United Nations headquarters in New York officially opened.
 
The United Nations was founded on October 2, 1945 after the Second World War. Today the international organization contains 193 Member States and is committed to maintaining international peace and security, developing friendly relations among nations and promoting social progress, better living standards and human rights.
