The First Black Female Flight Attendant

In 1958, Ruth Carol Taylor became the first African American woman to be hired as a flight attendant for Mohawk Airlines.

Prior to joining the Mohawk Airlines staff, Taylor had applied to Trans World Airlines, but was rejected based on her skin colour and ethnicity.

Her first trip was a flight from Ithaca to New York City on this day.
