FIRST BLACK MAN TO WIN THE HEISMAN TROPY

 
In 1961, Ernie Davis of Syracuse University became the first African-American football player to be named winner of the Heisman Trophy.
 
The Heisman Trophy is handed out annually to the r to the most outstanding player.
 
Davis played for Syracus University before being drafted by the Washington Redskins. Unfortunately he never played a professional game he was diagnosed with leukemia in 1962.  
 
Davis triumphant story has been turner into bio film called ‘The Express’ and a non-fiction book called ‘Ernie Davis: The Elmira Express, by Robert C. Gallagher.
