December 3, 1992 – Happy 20th Birthday Text Messages!

On this day in 1992, British engineer 22-year-old Neil Papworth, sent out the first text message from his work computer in Newbury, Berkshire.

It simply stated “Merry Christmas,” a festive greeting he sent to ‘Vodafone’ executive Richard Jarvis’ mobile phone, who was at a company Christmas party at the time according to Globe and Mail.

(I’m pretty sure Papworth was gifted with a very friendly Christmas bonus that year.)
