The city of Toronto has partnered up with the Ontario Council of Agencies Serving Immigrants to help break down what they believe is a rise in islamophobia in the city.
The partnership recently launched an advertisement last Tuesday which features a white male telling a woman in a hijab to go back where she came from.
“Where,” replies the woman, “North York?”
The bottom caption then reads “Muslims are a part of Toronto.”
The agency’s executive director Debbie Douglas says she has “absolutely” seen a rise in the anti-Muslim sentiment since refugees began arriving from Syria in large numbers in December. The agency hopes that ads like these will help break the stigma.
