Trial starts for Toronto cop charged in death of Sammy YatimSeptember 14, 2015
A trial has begun for the Toronto police officer charged in the death of 18-year-old Sammy Yatim two years ago, but the teen’s family was not present at the University Avenue courthouse. Constable James Forcillo, who was suspended without pay, was charged with second-degree murder and attempted murder after Yatim was fatally shot on a streetcar on Dundas Street West in July 2013. Surveillance and cell phone footage showed police shooting nine times at Yatim, who was alone in the streetcar wielding a knife. The incident reopened the debate about police tactics and interactions with the public. The pretrial motions outlined today are subject to a publication ban, and jury selection will begin September 30.
