Trinidadian radio and television icon “Aunty Hazel’ has passed away. Her age was not disclosed, but she is believed to be in her late 70s.


Hazel Redman Ward affectionately called “Aunty Hazel’ by her thousands of fans died after battling pancreatic cancer. Ward was a former English teacher who began her broadcasting career with Radio Trinidad.


In 1962 she was the news anchor for the first television station in Trinidad and Tobago television and she was also the first weather anchor. Her talent programs “Twelve and Under” and “ Teen Talent” showcased children across the country performing poetry, dance, music and singing.


In 2008 she was awarded the Gayelle’s Pierrot Award and in 2007 she was honored with the Trinidad and Tobago Publishers and Broadcasters Association award. She also was awarded the Humming Bird Medal in 2000.
