Izola Ware Curry, the woman who nearly killed Martin Luther King Jr, more than a half a century ago has died, at the age of 98. Curry passed away at Hillside Manor nursing home in Queens, New York on March 17, The Smoking Gun reported.
Curry, then 42, stabbed the civil rights leader in the chest with a letter opener during a book signing event in Harlem, New York, in 1958, a decade before he would be assassinated by James Earl Ray. According to reports, she had suffered from paranoia and delusions, leading up to her attempt to murder King. She believed that she was under constant surveillance, and the NAACP and King were conspiring against her.
On the day of the book-signing event, Curry was armed with a loaded pistol, but chose to use a 7-inch letter opener, instead when she approached him. King was immediately rushed to Harlem Hospital shortly after the incident.
Days after the attack, a press conference was held in his hospital room, King Said, “I feel no ill will toward Mrs. Izola Curry and know that thoughtful people will do all in their power to see that she gets the help she apparently needs if she is to become a free and constructive member of society.”
