The West Indies’ troubles followed them right into their World Cup debut, where they lost to Ireland by 4 wickets in Nelson, New Zealand. Lendl Simmons’ 102 seemed promising enough as the Windies reached 304/7 from 50 overs; Darren Sammy added 89. Irish spin bowler George Dockrell picked up 3/50 from 10. Still, Simmons’ century couldn’t stop Ireland, who made 307/6 from 45.5 overs. Man-of-the-match Paul Stirling made 92, Ed Joyce 84, and Niall O’Brien 79 not out. Bowling for the West Indies, Jerome Taylor took 3/71 from 8.5.
