Who Will Lifetime Choose Next?
Disney star Zendaya Coleman, who first took to Twitter to express her delight at being cast to portray R&B star Aaliyah in an upcoming bio-pic, has backed out of the project all-together!
Her announcement came days after a series of negative comments from Aaliyah’s family, who were furious with the TV project (headed by the Lifetime channel), which they regard as demeaning to the singer who died in a plane crash at the age of 22. They would prefer a big blockbuster movie. According to TMZ.com, Aaliyah’s uncle and former manager Benny Henderson stated that he would refuse the use of her music and had hired lawyers to block production.
Many more protesters tweeted that Coleman is ‘too young’, ‘too light’, or looked nothing like the Aaliyah, to which the Disney actress fired back: “Half Black is just enough. It doesn’t matter what color you are, it’s about how you portray the character…”
Coleman who noted that Aaliyah is one of her all time musical heroines, took to Twitter to express her gratitude in landing the role through a series of posts: ‘She’s been an inspiration and influence in my whole career, her talent still shines brighter then ever, all I wanna do is honor her. ‘Show how much she accomplished in only 22 years….she’s beautiful inside and there will never be another Aaliyah, I just hope to share her beautiful story, and make her proud up in heaven #babygirl #forever #OneInAMillion.’
Now that Coleman is no longer involved in the TV movie, its unclear whether Aaliyah: Princess Of R&B would go ahead now. Rumors are swirling around that Rihanna may be replacing Coleman for the titular role.
