Two more weeks needed to meet Syrian refugee target, says Ottawa

The federal government says they will need two more weeks to meet its original end-of-year target of bringing Syrian refugees to Canada. The initial goal of 10,000 was to be reached by today. But in an update at Pearson Airport, Immigration Minister John McCallum says they would only reach just over 6,000 by the day’s end and that the full 10,000 will be here by January. McCallum also says that a further 15,000 will arrive by the end of February, as originally planned. In March of last year, the federal Liberals had made the promise of accepting over 25,000 Syrians, and even after their October election victory, they have amended their plans on many occasions.
